Fuel Injector Replacement

Replace petrol or common-rail diesel fuel injectors: relieve fuel pressure, remove the rail and electrical connectors, fit new or reconditioned injectors with fresh seals, and on modern diesels code each injector to the ECU.

Quick answer

Fuel Injector Replacement costs $240–$4,000 AUD in Australia in 2026, parts and labour included. Independent mechanics typically charge 30-40% less than dealers for the same job.

🔧 What Mechanics Don't Tell You

  • Labour is the real variable. The same repair can cost 30-50% more at a dealer than an independent, purely on labour rate. Always ask for a written quote with labour hours itemised — if they won't itemise, walk away.
  • Aftermarket parts are fine for most jobs. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts carry a 30-60% premium. For non-safety-critical parts (pads, rotors, filters), reputable aftermarket brands (Bosch, Brembo, Sachs) perform identically for a fraction of the price.
  • Get 3 quotes — the spread is real. We've seen the same job quoted from $400 to $1,800 across Brisbane shops. The cheapest quote is not always the best, but neither is the most expensive.
  • If they won't itemise, walk away. A reputable mechanic will break down the quote into parts cost + labour hours + markup. If they give you a single round number, get a second opinion.

Tips

  • ✓Confirm whether the quote is per injector or a full set - diesel common-rail sets run 6-10x a petrol single
  • ✓Ask if injector coding is included - most post-2008 diesels need each new injector coded to the ECU ($80-$150)
  • ✓Request a leak-off test before approving replacement - it separates genuine injector faults from rail or seal problems for $50-$120

One Injector Is $185. A Full Set Is $4,000. The Actual Price Map

Injector pricing is really two markets. Petrol injectors are a mid-priced wearable part. Common-rail diesel injectors are precision components that must be coded to the ECU — and that is where quotes explode:

ScenarioTypical fitted costWhat drives it
Petrol — single injector$240-$445Standard Australian benchmark; intake access adds labour on V6s
Petrol — full 4-cyl set$840-$1,560High-km sets wear together; the second hour of labour is the cheap part
Diesel — genuine coded injector, each$500-$1,2001KD/1VD common-rail; correction code printed on the head
Diesel — full set with coding (Hilux/Prado 1KD)$2,900-$4,000Genuine units + new seals + lines + ECU coding, workshop aggregate
Diesel — reconditioned exchange, each$185-$500Diesel injection specialist; flow-tested and recalibrated
Injector coding (common-rail diesels, mid-2000s on)$80-$150Confirm it is IN the quote — coded parts without coding do nothing
Off-car testing / ultrasonic clean$70-$250Sometimes revives borderline injectors and saves the set

Community anchors behind these ranges, 2026: a VW Touareg owner quoted $1,600 per injector; a ~$6,000 full-set Toyota diesel bill with about $1,000 of it labour; a Ford Ranger four-injector job around $2,800 with coding and new seals; and an Audi A4 quoted $2,400 for injectors after the fuel pump was first replaced on a misdiagnosis (see fuel pump replacement for that decision tree).

The $185 Rebuilt Injector vs the $7,000 Dealer Quote

On modern diesels there are three honest ways to buy injectors. The spread between them is routinely $3,000-$5,000 on the same car:

Reconditioned exchange (specialist)

$185-$500 each + coding. Flow-tested, recalibrated, warrantied by the rebuilder. The sensible route on high-km work utes and out-of-warranty engines. One Hilux owner paid $185 + $100 fit against a $7,000 dealer quote. Get the test report with the invoice.

Genuine OEM coded units

$500-$1,200 each + coding. The right call on newer engines still under warranty or emissions compliance, fleet vehicles you resell with paperwork, and engines where maximum injector life justifies the premium.

Dealer, all-genuine full set

$2,900-$7,000 on a 1KD/1VD. The $7,000 quote is real and it happens. If you take this route, insist on per-injector line items, coding included, and the old parts back — then price route one before you sign.

Three traps either way: unbranded injectors from online marketplaces fail within months — the warranty behind the unit matters more than the price; new seals ($100-$300 the set) must be replaced at every install; and piezo injectors (most Euro diesels) generally can't be reliably rebuilt, so exchange pricing applies to solenoid-type Japanese common-rail units. The 1KD caveat is bigger than price: blow-by gas getting past tired injector base seals whips the oil into sludge, blocks the oil pick-up screen, and starves the engine — the infamous 1KD “death rattle” path to a seized motor. If a 1KD has been running on worn seals, the seals and the pick-up screen are engine-saver items, not injector cosmetics.

Before You Approve: The Injector Misdiagnosis Ladder

Rough idle, diesel knock, hard starts and black smoke all get quoted as “injectors”. Work the ladder in order — each rung is cheaper than a full set:

1.
Fault-code scan — $0-$90. P0201-P0204 point at an injector circuit. P0087/P0093 (rail pressure / flow) often mean the supply side — filter, high-pressure pump, or air ingress — not the injectors. Low rail pressure can also be the HPFP itself; see fuel pump replacement costs.
2.
Leak-off (back-leak) test — $50-$120. The decisive cheap test: bottles on each injector's return line show in minutes which one drains too much fuel back. Many diesel shops run it free if you are paying for the follow-up work.
3.
Injector base seals — $100-$300 the kit. On 1KD Hilux/Prado engines, blow-by gas past tired base seals mixes the oil into sludge that blocks the pick-up screen — the notorious “death rattle” path to a seized engine. Seals belong in any honest injector job; a hard-start-from-air problem usually lives at the fuel filter head instead.
4.
Fuel quality and filter — $30-$120. Contaminated fuel clogs nozzles; a clogged filter starves the rail. An off-car ultrasonic clean and retest ($70-$250) can revive borderline injectors without replacement.
5.
Only now approve the job. Itemised quote: per-injector price, part type (genuine/reconditioned), coding included, seals renewed. Ask for the old injectors back — a failed unit in your hand is your evidence if the diagnosis is disputed.
